Career in Interior Designing

Introduction

Space for residential and commercial places is shrinking due to rapid urbanisation. This anomalous situation calls for professional help to make the living and working space more comfortable, beautiful and practical. Earlier, it was the task of an architect to do the entire exteriors along with the interiors of a house, office or any other functionally useful edifice. Now-a-days people have become more and more particular about the designs and the layout of the living or working area. This has led to an increasing requirement for professionals in interior designing.

As an interior designer, you will be trained to design exclusive furniture artefacts and fittings besides learning managerial skills. With the help of a course in interior designing, you will come out with a professional designing solution that is efficient, eye-catching and at the same time safe.

The basic job of an interior designer is to make optimal utilisation of available space. Further, you have to make the space more functional and in accordance with the taste and budget of the client. Besides visualising and conceptualising the designs for new structures, interior designers also plan the interiors of existing structures that are undergoing renovation or extension.

Step-by-Step

The popularity of interior designing as a discipline is not confined to urban cities but it has rapidly spread to small town and cities across the nation. This is largely because of the changing lifestyle of people and their want to customise their residence with the help of an expert who can understand their taste and preference.

Numerous reputed institutions all over India are offering study programs in interior designing. The basic qualification to get into most of these programs is a 10+2. Moreover, you will also have to get through an entrance examination that judges your drawing and design skills. It is advisable to prepare a portfolio of your creative work and display it at the time of admission to these study programs.

Architecture and design colleges generally offer study programs in interior designing. Most of these are diploma programs. You can also pursue an interior design course from a polytechnic or a private institution that provides specialisation in a particular area of interior designing.

Furthermore, entry into this profession is also possible through other areas of study such as graduation in architecture, fine arts, design, environment planning or a post-graduate program in a similar field.

Specialisation in a particular area of interior designing can be done depending on your choice. For example; you can excel in business design, residential design or landscape designing. You can further gain expertise for yourself in particular area of a building such as bedrooms, kitchens or baths.

There is enormous demand for qualified interior designers in India. So to be professionally qualified from a reputed institution is a must. With professional qualification comes the assurance of a good job.  And with adequate experience, you can start your own interior decoration business.

Start Early

The earliest you can start for a career in interior designing is 10+2. However, it is essential to have excellent drawing and designing skills to get into this job profile. Furthermore, if you have knowledge of decorative items, home improvement products and basics of architecture, then it becomes easier to follow this particular career path.

Is it the Right Career for Me?

The key ingredient to be a successful interior designer is client satisfaction. In this context, all you need is creative thinking, excellent communication skills, originality, good listening capability and a keen interest in transforming a simple place to a beautiful one by adding extra zing to it. If you think you have it in you, then this is the right career for you.

An understanding of fashion, cultural preferences and good management skills are also equally important aspects expected for a career in the interior designing business. A professional course helps you to develop and polish these traits.

What would it Cost Me?

You can get into this profession at different levels of your academic life be it a 10+2 or a post-graduate program. However, most of the students generally opt for short and long term diploma courses. All these courses can cost you around Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 roughly.

Funding/Scholarship

Different institutions offer scholarships to students from the weaker sections of the society, children of defence personnel and physically challenged candidates on the basis of merit.

Job Prospects

There is a scarcity of professional interior designers in our country. With more and more people willing to get their residence and working areas designed according to their taste, there has been a great demand for experienced interior designers.

Employment prospects are plentiful and in various fields. Setting up your own business is also a very lucrative option in this industry.

Pay Packet

Some features that affect the pay packet of an interior designer are regional differences, name, repute, experience and demand.

For beginners the salary can be around Rs 10,000. For experienced professionals the monthly pay cheque can vary from Rs 30, 000 to Rs 75,000.

After gaining some experience, you can start up your own business. Self-employment is very profitable as when you become an established interior designer you can ask for the moon.

Demand and Supply

There is an imbalance between the demand and supply of professionals in this field. The demand for experienced interior designers is on a high in spite of the recent global economic slowdown that hit almost all sectors of the world economy.

The increasing construction activity in urban areas and small towns has only added to the demand for these professionals. The demand for interior designers has surpassed the supply.

Thus, if you can create magic with colours, shapes and designs, then just obtain a professional course to begin a successful career in the alluring world of fashion designing.

The clock is ticking for students who are all set to take the ISC Board examination starting from February 13. With just a week left, stress levels are likely to be high. The number of sleeping hours must have gone down and students wouldn't let go of their books. Although before the exam, every student experiences this sense of fear, this is not the right approach for preparation. That is why at this point of time I only concentrated on revisions without letting the exam pressure build up.
One should understand that it is not the 'quantitative' effort , but the quality that matters. The emphasis should be on learning to strike a balance between subjects. Practical subjects like accounts and mathematics need continuous practice and theoretical subjects like commerce require a thorough understanding of the concepts.
I never attended any coaching classes. The guidance that I received was from my school teachers. Personally, I believe that 80% of one's success depends on a student's effort, 10% on the strategies students use to tackle exams and the remaining 10% on guidance, either through schools or coaching institutes.
When I was preparing for the exams last year, in the afternoon , I made sure to sleep for half-an-hour to one hour. This kept my energy level high.
While studying, I used to take a 10-minute break after every two hours. During this time, I always interacted with people around me. This helped me concentrate better whenever I got back to studying.
All that is required to crack the exams is sincerity, determination , time-management and self-confidence . My advice to all students appearing for the ISC exams is to remember not to make half-hearted attempts and that there are no shortcuts to success.

Career after 12th 10th education program-What to do After 10th class and 12th class board examination

It is a great dilemma for the students to choose a particular stream for their higher education. Traditionally speaking, it has been considered that there exist only two stream after 12th where you can have a good career i.e. Medical and Engineering. Students opting for Maths, Biology are considered to be brilliant than those opting other streams for eg. Arts, Commerce, Law etc, specifically in India. This is a norm which has been set up by a Indian Society and anyone deviating from this norm would be questioned by everyone " Why didn't you go for IIT ? " , " Why not Medical? Its a great field " , " See how IIT students get good jobs, go for it ". Well these are the questions which block the thinking of a student to think beyond this and start considering these two as the only options which are available to him for higher studies. I have seen many students who are not at all interested in these fields, but even though they prepare for it because society has given its approval only for these two streams. Well, I am able to say all this because I am one of such cases who opted for Maths after 10th without thinking about my interest, as to What am I interested in ? But luckily I decided at the crucial point and left the idea of doing engineering and opted for law and I am not regretting my decision, actually I am very happy with this.

This post is not meant to favour something or against something, but this is reality and we can not ignore it that there is a very limited knowledge which is available to the students of other streams and that is the reason why they get confused while choosing a career in a particular field. "Three Idiots" has represented this matter in a very decent way as to how Farhan's family says on his birth " Mera Beta Farhan Engineer banega ". It was decided since his birth as to what he has to do in future and he did that accordingly but at last found the way to do the thing in which wants to do but after a great struggle. Even he was surrounded by the questions "Abbu nhi manege" . This is in fact has become the reality and case of Farhan can be counted as an exception where his parents were convinced and in most of the cases it is very hard to convince them and at last they choose the filed which is not chosen by them but by their parents, relatives. This is a very great problem which has been rooted in the society which has to removed otherwise there would be many student who could have done a great job in other fileds would land up doing some clerical work because of their disinterest in the field which has been chosen for them by their elders.

This is a very crucial decision in a life of a person, and it should not be imposed on him. His choice should get the utmost importance because it is he who is going to study and anyone should not play with his future arbitrarily. I have seen many people who could have done well in case they had been doing the thing which they were interested in, but has achieved a lot less because of the wrong choice. This happens not only due the pressure which one gets from the family but sometimes a person himself is confused while deciding this crucial matter. Even after taking certain subjects after 10th, he doesn't know why he has chosen that subject and is he studying that subject, just to get a job ? But is it necessary that you would get a high paying job by making a wrong decision by not choosing an area which you are interested in? Trust me you would do much more better in a field you are interested in, than the streams which one chooses just because it is considered good. Because, one can do well anywhere if he has capability of doing such thing. Take for example, you may be interested in Politics but may not be seeing a good future in it, but have you ever thought of at least trying it?Consider Chetan Bhagat, a well known Indian writer, who has completed his graduation from IIT Delhi and post-graduation from IIM, Ahemdabad, left his job and started writing novels only, indeed he once informed in an interaction that he would be working on the movies based on his novels. But have you ever thought what was the use of the IIT degree which he had got? His destiny was not become a Manager or for the matter an Engineer but a writer. Even you might be interested in writing but have you ever thought of doing this.

Even if you are not convinced with the discussion above and you are still confused as to which stream you should join, then you can consult the eligible person who suggest you and can give you a clear idea about the opportunities which one in respective streams because if you don't do this at this moment then you might be regretting your whole life by not making the right choice when you had a chance to do so. Even I had many friends who could have done a lot better in other fields than those which they have chosen but it is very hard to convince someone and tell them that you can have a better career in some other place. This article may convince you or may not be able to convince you but please think about this matter at least once carefully before making any choice because the period which you are going to spend after 12th would be the deciding factor for your whole life and it should be taken arbitrarily. It always better to think before than regretting later on.
